We wanted to try a new kind of art last night and had a great time with it! I took an extra hot glue gun that I had on hand and rather than feeding a glue stick through it, we fed crayon pieces through it! The kids really liked seeing how the wax moved and melted into different shapes. Here’s what we did:

Start with a canvas, a low temp glue gun, and crayon pieces that have been unwrapped. Carefully feed the crayon pieces through the glue gun and give them a moment to melt. Then, “paint” streaks/dots/shapes onto the canvas with the wax. A little bit goes a long way!

Then we used a hair dryer to fan the wax and melt it out further from there. It was fun watching it take shape!

After that, we repeated the process again with a different color of wax

And went back to the hairdryer method to spread out the wax

After they were happy with how the wax had taken shape, the kids finished off their projects with orange watercolor paint on the untouched parts of the canvas. The also used a black permanent marker to write a Halloween message on the spooky art and draw some Halloween images. They had a great time with this project!

I wanted to do a spooky art image as well, but I just used the hot glue gun application method and didn’t use the hair dryer at all. The turquoise color and the black tree are both made with crayon wax, and I painted some orange watercolor paint onto the canvas after I was done applying the wax.

  2. This is really cool. I know my kids would love this. How did you prevent the wax from getting on your floor?
